SYNOPSIS: Jeffrey and Judy Smith, both in their fifties, had been married only five months when they decided to take a weekend trip to Philadelphia for a pharmaceutical conference. They drove to Boston's Logan Airport on April 9, 1997 for their flight when Judy realized she didn't have her ID. The couple decided to travel separately to Philadelphia and meet up later at the hotel since Jeffrey had meetings that he couldn't miss. They were reunited later that evening, ordered a pizza in their hotel room and made plans for the following day. Judith planned to spend the day sightseeing while Jeffrey went to the conference.

The next morning Jeffrey left for the conference. That was the last time he saw his wife alive. Jeffrey, Judy's grown children and Philadelphia police searched the city for any trace of Judy to no avail. Then, in September, Judy's body was discovered on a remote hillside near Asheville, North Carolina. Bloodstains on the clothing indicate that she may have been stabbed. There was an unidentified pair of Bolle' sunglasses and a blue backpack found at the scene.

Authorities with the Buncombe County North Carolina Sheriff's Office have reason to believe that Judy Smith came to North Carolina willingly. She was dressed for the terrain and for a day of hiking when her body was found. Shop owners in the area remembered talking with "Judy from Boston," and a local hotel clerk remembers a "Judy from Boston" staying in the hotel from April 10-12. Police do not suspect Jeff Smith of murdering his wife. But despite his insistence that the marriage was in good shape and that his wife must have met with foul play in Philadelphia, police believe Judy may have planned her disappearance. Investigators believe that the killer is not a native of North Carolina, but may have ties to the area.
