Everything seemed to be going Jodie's way. Soon, her take-charge personality got her promoted to staff supervisor of the slot machine department. As such, Jodie's position required her to oversee employees' job performance. According to Shawn, Jodie often had to file reports regarding employees' behavior on the job. If things didn't improve, the employee was brought before the Casino management board and put on probation. One employee was fired after being put on probation. Just weeks later Shawn believes, out of vengeance, the employee brought a grievance against Jodie directly to the tribal council. As a result of the complaint, Jodie lost her job. She spent the next month petitioning to get it back.

Sometime later the couple began receiving disturbing anonymous phone calls. Late on November 21st, Shawn and Jodie were spending a quiet night at home when a strange noise startled the Bordeaux's dog. Shawn followed him to the back porch. Soon bullets were fired through the home. Shawn could see that Jodie was dead. He quickly dialed 911 hoping to save his unborn baby, but to no avail. That night, Shawn lost both Jodie and the baby. Despite an exhaustive investigation, four years later, no one has been charged with murder. There were no witnesses and no weapons were found. But Shawn still holds out hope that someday there will be justice for Jodie.
