SYNOPSIS: In 1994, Jeanne Molina moved to Southern California to start a new life. At the time her daughters were ten and four. She also had a two-year-old son. Jeanne landed a position as a cook at a Red Robin restaurant in Tustin, California. Before too long Red Robin offered Jeanne a job training new employees. Her life was falling into place so well that she had made plans for her daughter, Joanna, to live with her in Tustin. Jeanne's mother and stepfather drove Joanna to the Red Robin on Monday, July 18th and were stunned to find out that Jeanne hadn't reported to work at all that day. Jeanne's parents knew that something was wrong as Jeanne was looking forward to seeing her daughter. The next day her mother filed a missing person's report.

The Westminster Police Department had received a call at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 17th. Two residents had witnessed an older model beige Nissan Sentra pull into the driveway of a water storage facility that was under construction. The driver, described as an olive skinned, dark-haired male stopped the vehicle. He picked up a large piece of asphalt from the construction debris on the ground and slammed it down on something. The man noticed he was being watched and quickly returned to his vehicle and drove off. The couple realized that a crumpled body was lying next to the fence where the truck had been parked. Officers arrived and realized that the female corpse was so badly damaged that it was hard to determine much about her identity. It was apparent that she had been stabbed several times and had been run over with a car. An autopsy revealed that she had been raped, strangled and beaten about the head and chest before being shoved out of the vehicle.

Jeanne Molina languished as a Jane Doe for several days until Jeanne's landlord, who heard she had been missing, contacted police after reading about the victim in the newspaper. A fingerprint match confirmed that the victim was Jeanne Molina. Detectives interviewed Red Robin employees who reported that Jeanne had left work at 11:00 p.m. on Saturday. She returned later and talked with a fellow cook, Carlos Garcia Berdeja, 30. Police surmise that Jeanne left with Berdeja to celebrate her daughter's upcoming arrival. Her car was found in a parking lot near the restaurant a few days after she was identified. Berdeja had called in sick on Sunday, explaining that there had been a family emergency and that he was heading to Mexico with his family. Another Red Robin employee told authorities that approximately a month before Jeanne's death, Berdeja had threatened him with a large kitchen knife and boasted that he had murdered someone in his native Mexico and hadn't been apprehended. The next day, Berdeja showed his co-worker a paper written in Spanish that indicated he was a wanted fugitive.

On the same day he reported in sick, Berdeja was seen trying to clean bloodstains from his Nissan Sentra. Berdeja and his common-law wife, Leticia Herrera Esteves, quickly sold most of their possessions. They took off with their two small children, telling people they were returning to Mexico to visit sick relatives. Police uncovered information that Berdeja had a history of dating fellow employees at the restaurants where he worked. He also was a drug smuggler. He allegedly has another wife and children in Mexico.

Carlos Garcia Berdeja was born 11/04/63. He is 37 years old, 5 foot 7 inches tall, and weighs 180 pounds. He works as a short order cook and is an avid volleyball player. He is adept at creating aliases and should be considered extremely dangerous. The FBI considers him one of the 10 Most Wanted in Los Angeles.

If you have any information on the whereabouts of Carlos Garcia Berdeja, please contact the Westminster (California) Police Department, the FBI, or call the Unsolved Mysteries hotline, 1-800-876-5353.
