INVESTIGATORS
LOIS GIBSON

Rebroadcast Date: December 5, 2001 (Originally broadcast on September 11, 2001)

SYNOPSIS: Lois Gibson is a self-taught portrait artist who is able to get inside the heads and emotions of traumatized victims and witnesses - she can draw extraordinarily accurate pictures of criminals who have committed murder, rape, sexual assault, robbery and everything in-between. So precise are Gibson's sketches that one out of three of her drawings result in an arrest.

Gibson estimates she has sketched more than 3,000 criminals. And while many of her sketches do lead to an arrest, there are always cases which remain unsolved. One current case occurred this past February in Humble, Texas, a Houston suburb. Brothers Jason and Philip Bomer were shopping at Sears at the Deerbrook Mall. As they exited the store, two well-dressed African American men approached them. One said he needed to sell his computer and asked if either of the boys would be interested. He said the computer was in great shape and he would be willing to sell it for a steal. The men invited the brothers to come out to their van, a maroon Chevy Astro, to look at the equipment. The men opened the van and when Phillip commented that he didn't see a computer inside, the two men - both calm and talkative -- quickly and quietly pulled out revolvers and ordered Phillip and Jason into the vehicle. Fearing that if they tried to run they would be shot immediately, the boys complied. The van then headed for the highway. While traveling full speed on the highway Jason decided it was now or never - and quickly bolted from the van door rolling out onto the freeway shoulder. Phillip followed in quick succession. Philip and Jason suffered severe injuries - Jason was in the hospital for weeks with a badly broken leg and collarbone and is still unable to work. Both are convinced that if they hadn't jumped, they would have been robbed and then killed. Jason believes the van had Florida license plates. The brothers also believe that others have fallen victim to this same setup.

Authorities contacted Lois Gibson. Jason Bomer, like so many witnesses, initially told Gibson he was unable to help her. But in less than two hours, Gibson finished the sketches. Although the drawings appeared in the local Humble paper, it's possible that the two men have left Texas.
