Rebroadcast Date: December 7, 2001 (Originally broadcast on October 1, 2001) SYNOPSIS: Twenty-eight year old Genoveva Velasquez was working two jobs to support her parents and her young daughter. Her goal was to have her own business and to provide for her family. She met Michael Alfonso while working as a shift supervisor at a local restaurant. At the time Genoveva was having marital problems and turned to Michael for comfort. Genoveva did not confide in anyone that she was having a relationship with a co-worker, though she did hint that there were problems in her marriage. It soon became apparent to co-workers that Geneoveva and her husband were having trouble. They worked together and tension between the two was noticeable. When Genoveva befriended Michael Alfonso she had no idea he had a lengthy rap sheet which included convictions for aggravated battery, weapon offenses and rape. Alfonso was also being sought for questioning in the homicide of Sumanear Yang from Wheaton, Illinois, a 23-year-old Cambodian female whose body was found November 8, 1992. Sumanear dated Alfonso while separated from her husband. The night she disasppeared some believe she met with Alfonso to tell him she planned to reconcile with her husband. When Genoveva's relationship with Alfonso began to sour, she tried to pull away but Alfonso would not hear of it. He began to threaten and stalk her. On June 5, 2001, Alfonso asked Genoveva to have lunch with him and she refused. Michael Alfonso became so enraged that he followed Velasquez to the restroom and wouldn't leave until she would talk with him. Then, witnesses say, Alfonso grabbed her, pushed her and threatened to hurt her and her family if she broke up with him. Genoveva reported the incident to police but requested that Alfonso not be arrested or contacted for fear of retaliation. However, she asked that the police patrol her home at night to check for trouble. The police patrolled her street several times, but saw no sign of Alfonso. The following day Genoveva arrived at her work and, according to witnesses, Alfonso approached her outside the restaurant. He walked past several vehicles in the 'drive-thru' lane and walked directly up to Genoveva and shot her at point blank range. She fell to the ground. Alfonso stood over Genoveva and continued to fire several more rounds as she lay helpless on the ground. According to authorities, eyewitnesses positively identified Michael Alfonso as Genoveva's killer. Several others saw a black Pontiac Firebird parked behind the restaurant and reported that the car sped away from the crime scene. Michael Alfonso owned a black Pontiac. Authorities charged Michael Alfonso with first degree murder. Investigators believe that Alfonso has little resources to be able to make a prolonged run. He did, however, borrow money from a co-worker the night before the killing. In August, 2001, two months after the killing, Michael Alfonso's 1994 black Pontiac Firebird was found at the Indianapolis International Airport. UPDATE: After three years on the run, Michael Alfonso was arrested in the port city of Veracruz, Mexico. Acting on a tip, police took him into custody and deported him to the United States. Alfonso will stand trial for the murders of Genoveva Velasquez and Sumanear Yang.
