As seen on October 2, 2001 on Unsolved Mysteries SYNOPSIS: Friday, October 1, 1993 began like every other day for 21-year-old Heather Tallchief. She and her two partners were responsible for making the rounds of several casinos, replenishing their automatic teller machines with cash. The final stop of the day was an ATM near the casino's side entrance. Standard procedure called for Heather to drive the van and pick up her partners when their job inside was finished. When her partners finished they did not see Heather or the van anywhere. They initially assumed she got lost or was stuck in traffic or that maybe she might have been in an accident. A surveillance camera at the point where Heather dropped off her partners recorded the moment she was last seen. The tape reveals no sign that she had been hijacked or met with any sort of foul play. When police were notified, they, too, could not find any trace of Heather or the van. They concluded that she deliberately fled with three million dollars in cash. Heather Tallchief appears to have pulled off what many considered to be the perfect crime. She not only got away with the money, but has managed to elude capture for eight years. According to the FBI, it is one of the largest armored car robberies in which the perpetrator has not been brought to justice. Heather Tallchief applied for the job with the armored car company approximately two months before the robbery. The investigation has led authorities to believe that the entire event, from the moment she applied for the job to the robbery, was planned in advance for the sole purpose of committing the crime. Investigators soon realized Heather was not acting alone. Fingerprints at her apartment were identified as those of Roberto Solis - a convicted murderer who had been released from prison six years earlier. In 1969, he had shot and killed an armored car guard during an unsuccessful robbery. Intelligent and articulate, Solis authored five books during his 17-year prison stay. Professional writers heralded his achievement as proof of his rehabilitation. Tallchief and Solis met in San Francisco, where they began a relationship, and, authorities say, subsequently planned the crime. Two hours after Heather drove the armored van away from the casino, an unusual couple arrived at the Las Vegas McCarran Airport. They had chartered a private jet to Denver, Colorado. They were very well disguised. Solis looked like an older gentleman - a doctor- and Heather looked like a sickly, older lady. Only three small suitcases were taken aboard the craft when they traveled from Las Vegas to Colorado. Authorities theorized they had shipped the money ahead. By the time the two were traced to Denver, it was too late. Denver had been only a brief stopover for the fugitives before they continued on to their final destination. But where was it? The FBI believes Heather Tallchief and Roberto Solis may be in hiding somewhere in Central America.
Characteristics
Roberto Solis is now 56 years old. He is 5' 11" tall and weighs 180 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. He has a tattoo on his right forearm reading, "Esta Vida Loca," which translates as "It's the Crazy Life." Solis has also been known to use the alias Julius Gabriel Suave. UPDATE: For twelve years it seemed that Heather Tallchief had gotten away with the perfect crime, but in September of 2005 she turned herself into police, saying she was tired of being a fugitive. Tallchief had been living in the Netherlands with her boyfriend and ten year old son. Her attorney says she has not seen Roberto Solis for over ten years. Solis remains at large and is still wanted by the FBI.
