Rebroadcast Date: October 22, 2002 SYNOPSIS: Churchgoer and outdoorsman Robert Fisher seemed to have the American dream - devoted wife, one boy and one girl, suburban home at the end of a cul-de-sac. Then Fisher was accused of annihilating his entire family: slashing their throats while sleeping, then rigging the house to explode. After nearly a year, Fisher - whom police believe to be an elusive and wily suspect - has yet to be found. On the morning of April 10, 2001, an explosion ripped through the home of Robert Fisher of Scottsdale, Arizona, causing the house to burst into flames. Firefighters discovered the remains of Fisher's wife Mary and their two children. But 40-year-old Robert Fisher was not among the dead. Police believe that Fisher, a seemingly devoted father and husband, had waited for everyone to fall asleep the night before. They say he then shot his wife Mary in the back of the head, and next slit the throats of Mary and their two children, 12-year-old Brittney and 10-year-old Bobby. Police speculate that Fisher disconnected the home's furnace from its gas connection and then rigged the house to explode the next morning - timed to detonate hours after he had already left town. Extra accelerant was used in the bedrooms and on the bodies to cause even more damage. Robert Fisher, say investigators, was hoping to leave no trace of a crime scene behind. Fisher has been missing ever since. Investigators began to believe that Fisher was a man of many faces. Though a seemingly devoted husband and father, in reality, his marriage had been tumultuous from the start. Mary had complained that he was controlling and authoritative. If a toy wasn't put away as he had ordered, that toy would disappear. Neighbors report that they heard frequent and bitter bickering. Later, neighbors also said that Robert would be heard screaming at the children. The marriage reportedly nearly came to an end a few years before the explosion - when Robert allegedly confessed he had contracted a sexually transmitted disease. Mary kicked him out of the house but within a few days, Fisher returned and the couple reconciled. At the time of Mary's death there were rumors that Fisher was having an affair. Neighbors say the couple was heard arguing the night before the explosion. Earlier that evening, Robert had taken Brittney to an induction ceremony for the Junior Honor Society. Later he went to a store and purchased water-purification tablets, something one might buy for a remote camping trip. Police believe that an imminent divorce fueled Fisher's motive: better to kill the children than to have them go through the pain he went through as a teenager when his own parents divorced. Despite a massive state search, Fisher had seemingly vanished into thin air. A few days after the slayings, police were sure they had Fisher cornered in a small cave near Payson, Arizona - a few hours drive north of Scottsdale -- after his wife's SUV and his dog were spotted by a camper. But a special sewer camera showed no trace of Fisher in the cave. In fact, detectives believe that the truck was left there as a red herring. Though some believe Fisher committed suicide, police believe Fisher is still alive and has assumed a new identity. CHARACTERISTICS: Robert Fisher has been indicted for the murders of his wife and children. He is 41 years old, is 6 feet tall and weighs 190 pounds. He has blue eyes and brown hair, and also has surgical scars on his lower back and a gold crown on his upper left canine tooth. Robert Fisher should be considered armed and dangerous.
