Security at the hotel was alerted when the ambulance arrived. The paramedics and hotel security found Kristine in bed and the newborn baby, dead in the toilet. The ambulance transported Kristine to the hospital, and Kevin followed. At the hospital, when the police started to question Kevin, he excused himself to the bathroom and fled. Though the cause of the baby's death had not yet been determined, police then questioned Kristin. According to police, she was very calm. She was not upset or crying. Kristine was allegedly concerned about her belongings left at the hotel. According to police she did not care about what happened to the baby.

The next morning police learned that the baby had been born alive. The cause of death was drowning. Detectives returned to the hospital to question Westin - but while they were checking in at the nurse's station, she was checking out the back door. Seconds later, Kristin Westin was gone. Then, two days after Woo and Westin disappeared, police say Woo stole a pickup truck in nearby Henderson, Nevada. It was found abandoned a few days later south of Los Angeles. That brought the FBI into the case. Westin and Woo are both charged with second-degree murder, child abuse with substantial bodily harm and possession of a controlled substance. Woo is also wanted for carjacking. But despite the nationwide manhunt, police say the couple has not been deterred from their life of crime.

Kristine has been sighted twice in the Southern California area. She was arrested by the Costa Mesa Police Department for shoplifting. To derail Costa Mesa police from making an immediate identification, she reportedly used one of her aliases: Kari Lynn Meeker. Since shoplifting is a misdemeanor, Westin, posing as Meeker, was not held in jail. There have not been any sightings of Kevin Woo since his departure, but police assume the two are together.

A few days after Kristine Westin and Kevin Woo allegedly took the life of their child, the Las Vegas Chapter of the Knights of Columbus gave baby John Doe a name, Kyle - and a proper burial. However, there will be no closure until his parents are arrested and tried for murder.

UPDATE: In March of 2003, Kristine Sue Westin was arrested on a shoplifting charge in Lynwood, Washington. Her arrest led police to a motel where she and Dale Woo had been staying. After a 30 hour standoff with police, Woo shot himself and died at the scene. Westin later pled guilty to felony child abuse and involuntary manslaughter and will serve a five to 24 year prison term.
