Broadcast Date: July 8, 2002 SYNOPSIS: After a late summer fishing trip, Stryder Styarfyr and another man headed for home. As dusk approached, concerns were raised about getting back before dark. As the boat sped across the water, Stryder reached for a beer from an ice chest. The boat's driver says he heard his dog yelp, and when he looked around, Stryder was gone. The apparent accidental drowning of Stryder Styarfyr has been in question ever since. Investigators quickly learned that Styarfyr may have had reason to disappear. Ten days after he supposedly slipped and fell overboard, Stryder Styarfyr was due to stand trial in Roseburg, Oregon. One thing was certain, this charming and charismatic man may not have been the person he appeared to be. Stryder Styarfyr first surfaced in Oregon in the mid-1980s. Within weeks, the enigmatic Styarfyr met a local woman. They fell in love and were soon married. By the early 1990s, the Styarfyrs had a son and daughter and had settled into a seemingly idyllic life in Roseburg, Oregon. The teenage daughter of a dear family friend was a frequent guest of the Styarfyrs. The girl visited so often that she became a second daughter to Stryder and his wife and a beloved sister to their kids. According to family members and friends, Styarfyr often told romantic tales revolving around his supposed exploits serving with Special Forces in Vietnam, spying for the CIA, or fighting alongside the Irish Republican Army. In addition, Stryder Styarfyr claimed he was the last surviving member of a Scottish clan, called the House of Ellen Styr. Stryder possessed a letter on embossed parchment stationery proclaiming him the sole heir to the clan's fortunes. As their young friend grew up, she continued to spend time with the Styarfyrs. And Stryder always made himself available to her. But, according to the then-14-year-old girl, those feelings of trust and security were stolen from her one night in the Styarfyr home. After advances on the girl, Stryder Styarfyr, a married father of two, allegedly seduced and then had sexual relations with the minor. For more than a year, the traumatized 14-year-old would keep secret what had allegedly happened that night. But Stryder Styarfyr's carefully crafted persona had already begun to crumble. According to his wife, her suspicions that he was being unfaithful to her were confirmed the day he brought home an unexpected guest, his new Internet business partner. Stryder apparently stunned his wife by proposing that she welcome this woman into their home as his second wife. Within weeks, his wife filed for divorce. But, it was not until after their divorce was final that Stryder's now former wife would apparently learn the true depth of his lies and deceit. Stryder's ex-wife then received a disturbing call from the teenage girl's step-father about the abuse. Stryder Styarfyr was formally indicted on felony rape and sexual assault charges. Authorities would learn that there may have been more secrets to uncover in the Styarfyr home. Years earlier, Victim Number 2, as she became known, had become close to the Styarfyr family and often babysat their children. This alleged victim was in ninth grade at the time she was first seduced by Stryder Styarfyr. She told authorities he had charmed her with fantastic tales of his Scottish inheritance and promises to make her his princess. Stryder Styarfyr was arrested and released on his own recognizance while awaiting trial. Then, just ten days before that trial was due to begin, Styarfyr vanished. The suspicions of investigators were quickly aroused. Did Stryder Styarfyr stage his own disappearance? Police found it strange that the boat was dry and didn't appear to have been used that day and all the fishing gear on board was clean and neatly stowed away. Inside Styafyr's pick-up truck, investigators were surprised to find a fishing license in the name of Daniel Chafe which was determined to be Styarfyr's legal name. They learned Stryder Styarfyr was only an alias, one of two he was known to use. Some knew him by the name of "Curtis Jacoby." Further investigation determined that Stryder Styarfyr had never served in Vietnam, never worked with the Central Intelligence Agency, and never fought with the IRA. Investigators don't believe that Stryder Styarfyr was on the boat and in fact believe he is alive and well. Stryder Styarfyr is wanted on 13 felony counts relating to the rape and sexual abuse of minors. Stryder Styarfyr is 43 years old. He had brown hair and brown eyes. He is 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs 163 pounds. Styarfyr has tattoos on his upper left arm, upper right arm, and left hand. He has traveled extensively throughout the United States and has lived in California, Oregon, New Mexico, Montana, Idaho, and Kansas. He is known to spend time on computers and enjoys surfing the Internet. If you have any information about the whereabouts of Stryder Styarfyr, please contact the FBI or call the Unsolved Mysteries hotline, 1-800-876-5353.
