SYNOPSIS: When Brent Trauth of Baton Rouge, Louisiana decided to sell his Nissan sports car, he found a ready buyer in Jon Christian Maggio. All Maggio needed to seal the deal was a cashier's check, and Brent agreed to drive him to the bank. During the short trip, the conversation was light and friendly. Then, without warning, it turned ugly. Apparently deciding that stealing the car was preferable to paying for it, Maggio pulled a gun, and, during the ensuing struggle, shot Trauth in the leg. He then dove out the passenger door, leaving Trauth to drive himself to the hospital.

The next day police tracked Maggio down and arrested him. Charged with attempted murder, and facing overwhelming evidence against him, he plea-bargained his way to a reduced sentence of five years. When he was released on parole, Jon Maggio immediately left for Mobile, Alabama, where family connections helped land him a position as Boarding Agent at Fillette Green Shipping Services. His new job involved processing payroll accounts for ships in dock - a service that often involved sizeable amounts of cash.

In Mobile, Maggio caught the eye of single mother Molly Perez, whom he married in April 1999, following a whirlwind romance. Although they appeared to be deeply in love, Molly's mother alleges the couple's relationship was stormy and sometimes even violent.

In August 1999, Maggio called a local bank in his capacity as a Fillette Green agent and arranged to process a cash check for $197,000. Then, sometime over the next few days, police believe he snuck into the office after hours and walked out with a blank check. On the appointed date, he showed up at the bank with the check, apparently authorized by the office manager, whose signature investigators would later determine to be forged. Moments later Maggio calmly walked out of the bank with the money.

Meanwhile, Molly left her little girl with her mother, and the couple left Mobile in a new 35-thousand dollar SUV, which Maggio had allegedly purchased with some of the stolen money. Four months later, the Maggios reportedly turned up in Staten Island, New York, using the names Rick and Sarah Parker.

Over the next year, Maggio bounced from one job to another before landing a sales position with a rare autograph dealer in Manhattan. When he attempted to cash a $1,500 check on his employer's account in the summer of 2001, a teller's routine authorization query led to the accusation that Maggio had embezzled as much as $14,000 from the company by forging authorized signatures. But by the time police were notified, Jon and Molly Maggio had already left town.

Detectives later discovered that Molly had purchased two airline tickets for a flight from New York to Los Angeles, but there have been no reported sightings on the west coast.

Jon Maggio is wanted on a federal warrant for one count of bank fraud. Molly Perez Maggio is not charged with any crime. Authorities believe they are probably using assumed names, and that Jon Maggio, wherever he is, is cooking up another scam.

UPDATE: Jon Maggio has been captured.  Maggio had been working in a Chicago restaurant – living under an assumed name –when a co-worker realized he had seen his photo at a local post office.  On July 24, 2003, police went to the restaurant and arrested him.  Jon Maggio was transported back to Mobile, Alabama where he is awaiting trial.
