MISSING
AMY WROE BECHTEL

As seen on July 9, 2001 on
Unsolved Mysteries

SYNOPSIS: At 9:30 a.m. on July 24, 1997, 24-year-old Amy Wroe Bechtel left her Lander, Wyoming apartment to run errands. Her husband, 27-year-old Steve Bechtel, went rock climbing with a friend. At 2:30 that afternoon, Amy was seen at a photo shop. This was the last confirmed sighting of Amy. It's believed she left the photo shop and drove into the Shoshone National Forest to check the course of a 10K race her gym was planning. When Steve returned home at 4:30 p.m., Amy was not there. By nightfall he alerted neighbors and the sheriff's department. Amy's white Toyota station wagon was found parked off a dirt road in the Shoshone Forest.

Soon, investigators turned their attention to Steve. In his journals, he expressed a need to be in control. Police found an undated poem about killing someone and hiding the body well enough that it wouldn't be found. Moreover, a camper said she'd seen a truck similar to Steve's racing through the forest the evening Amy vanished, and that a blond woman was in the passenger seat. Steve's attorney advised him not to take a polygraph and to no longer cooperate with police. Steve believes investigators focused on him because they could not come up with other suspects. Amy's family wishes Steve would cooperate with police.

Was Amy's disappearance a random abduction? If so, investigators and Amy's family hope that someone will come forward with information.
