SYNOPSIS: On January 11, 1995, murder suspect Albert Leon Fletcher escaped from custody while being transported to the Pasco County Courthouse in Dade City, Florida, to stand trial. Fletcher is a felon with a violent criminal history dating back to age 13. He is currently accused of armed robbery, aggravated assault and battery, and murder. Amazingly, all the charges stem from a single 24-hour period. The crime spree began on April 1, 1993. That night, Fletcher and his cousin, Douglas Porter, allegedly broke into a home in Dade City, Florida. They stole several guns, including a sawed-off shot gun and began a rampage. Around 10:00 p.m. the next night in Lakeland, Florida, two couples, pulled up in front of a grocery store. Fletcher and Porter pulled up right behind them. As the women got out of the car to enter the store, the two men began verbally harassing them. The suspects quickly got into a shouting match with the women's husbands, and then drove off with the enraged spouses in pursuit. Suddenly one of the suspects pulled out a sawed-off shotgun and shoved it into the men's faces, threatening to shoot. Moments later Fletcher and Porter drove off, leaving the two victims shaken but unharmed. At 11:00 p.m., 16-year-old Jason Hartman was heading home from his night job at a pizza parlor. But he was having car trouble. Sitting with the car doors locked, Hartman attempted to get the car started. Suddenly, Albert Leon Fletcher came up to the car, pointed the sawed-off shotgun at Jason and demanded the vehicle. Jason refused and jumped out of the car, running back inside the pizza parlor to call police. Fletcher gave up on the car and took off with Porter. For the second time that night, they left behind a victim who knew he had just gotten very lucky. An hour later on a highway outside of town, Fletcher and Porter encountered a car driven by 32- year-old Nelson Medina. Fletcher allegedly shot out the tire of Medina's car. The men then forced Medina's car off the road and boxed it in with their vehicle. According to what Porter later told authorities, Fletcher got out of the car with the sawed-off shotgun and approached Medina. Moments later, Fletcher allegedly shot and killed Medina. He then returned to the car and the two suspects drove off. Police were still at the scene of Medina's murder when another officer spotted Fletcher and Porter across town and pulled them over. The two men were subsequently arrested, charged with first degree murder and scheduled to be tried separately. Douglas Porter was convicted and sentenced to life in prison, but Albert Leon Fletcher escaped before he could be brought to trial. He hasn't been seen since. Authorities say that Fletcher has since claimed that he would not be taken alive, and should be considered armed and extremely dangerous. He is now on Florida's Most Wanted list. UPDATE: As a direct result of an Unsolved Mysteries broadcast, federal fugitive Albert Leon Fletcher, wanted on escape and first degree murder charges, was arrested on April 29, 1996 by members of the Delaware State Police. Fletcher was apprehended at a mobile trailer park near Smyrna, Delaware. An Unsolved Mysteries viewer contacted local Delaware authorities and identified Fletcher as a neighbor in the Holly Hills Mobile Estates. Delaware State Police then called the Unsolved Mysteries phone center and were immediately put in contact with the Pasco County (Florida) Sheriff's Department, who confirmed Fletcher's identity. He was then arrested without incident. Currently on Florida's most wanted list, Albert Leon Fletcher is the 136th fugitive apprehended as a result of Unsolved Mysteries. Albert Leon Fletcher was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.
