SYNOPSIS: In 1988, three men, Kenneth Griffen, Earl Smock, and Richard Mason were found murdered on Signal Mountain near Chattanooga, Tennessee. They all died of shotgun blasts after going ATV riding in the woods. The bodies were found 11 miles from the murder site. The ATVs were found in a nearby trash dump covered in blood. UPDATE: As a result of Unsolved Mysteries tips and a lengthy investigation, the 1988 murders of three men near Chattanooga, Tennessee have been solved. On Monday, April 15, 1997, Hamilton County, Tennessee authorities arrested former resident, Frank Casteel, in Red Bank, Tennessee on charges of first degree murder. Casteel had been a local resident at the time of the murders and was always considered a suspect. Casteel had since sold his property and moved to Georgia. New DNA tests linked fiber evidence to the suspect. Unsolved Mysteries tips also identified new witnesses which authorities say helped solidify the case. Frank Casteel has been charged with three counts of first degree murder. If convicted of all charges he could receive a sentence of life in prison. Frank Casteel was found guilty on three counts of first-degree murder. A jury convicted Casteel of the killings in 1998, but the Court of Criminal Appeals ordered a new trial, stating that some evidence should not have been admitted. The conviction was upheld in that trial on May 7, 2003.
