LOST LOVE: MOISES TREVES

SYNOPSIS: Moises Treves is a critically acclaimed chef. He owns two award-winning restaurants in Arizona, both curiously named "Such Is Life." How Moises acquired that name is at the center of his own personal unsolved mystery.

In the mid-1970's, Moises was the day cook at a small taco stand on the island of Cozumel in Mexico. He had a reputation for making the best tacos in town. One of Moises' favorite customers was an American tourist named Judy Anderson. Judy was a school teacher who visited the island seven times over a three year period. Moises vividly remembers Judy and her last visit in 1977. Judy stopped by the taco stand and asked if Moises would take her to the mainland so she could visit the ancient ruins there. Moises agreed and the next day closed up shop and set off with Judy on a day-long excursion. Their destination was the Mayan pyramids along the Yucatan Peninsula. Around noon, they stopped for lunch and communicated as best they could in broken English. Judy asked Moises if he would like to one day open his own restaurant. Moises told her it was his dream, but he didn't have the money to do so. Judy's response was "Such Is Life." Nothing more was said. But deep inside Moises an idea had taken root. It would begin to blossom later that afternoon.

As the day came to a close, it was time to say goodbye. Moises would take a ferry back to the island. Judy would stay on the mainland to catch a flight back to the United States. Before parting, Judy had an unexpected gift for Moises. She handed him an envelope and told him not to open it until she was gone. When Moises did open the envelope, he was stunned to find five $100 dollar bills and a hastily written note which read: "Dear Moises. Go make 'Such is Life' happen. Love, Judy." Moises did just that. Within a month, he had opened his own tiny restaurant on Cozumel. Naturally, he named it "Such Is Life." Moises eagerly awaited Judy's next trip to the island. But he never saw her again. Now, some twenty years later, Moises Treves is a U.S. citizen. His restaurants have been lauded by both local newspapers and national press. He and his family live in Scottsdale, Arizona, and believe they owe much of their good fortune to the unselfish kindness of Judy Anderson. They would like to find Judy to personally thank her.

UPDATE: On Monday, May 19, 1997, Moises Treves' benefactor contacted the Unsolved Mysteries Phone Center. Judy, whose last name Moises remembered incorrectly, had watched the broadcast. She was surprised to discover that her gift had such a great impact on Moises. Judy, who prefers that her last name and residence location remain confidential, was thrilled to learn of Moises' success. The two were put in contact with each other and spoke by phone that same day.
