CASE DETAILS

On January 5 th , 1991, a peaceful neighborhood in Orange, California, was rocked by a violent crime.   Resident John Salkins was relaxing at home that night:

“I was in my living room watching televisio and I heard an engine revving on the street, which is unusual at that time of night. And I got up to look out the window, and there were shots fired. I immediately went out to the front of my house and almost instantly a car sped by with what turned out to be the suspects. As he hit the end of the street, I saw him turn, and then they were gone.”

In the aftermath, a young man was shot and left paralyzed, his life forever changed.

Rohrey Wychgel was 25 and all set to ask his girlfriend to marry him. He had just graduated from a technical training school and planned to open his own auto repair shop.

That night, Rohrey was on his way to see his girlfriend. He said he made a quick stop at his house around 9:30 PM:

“I parked my car, turned the headlights off, left the parking lights on. I left the car running. It wasn’t uncommon for me to do that. People know when I’m there, and when I’m not, just by the sound of the car.”

According to Rohrey, on his way out, he went into the garage to find an extra set of stereo speakers for his girlfriend’s sister:

“I wasn’t in there for more than a minute at the longest and I heard my car rev up.”

Rohrey cannot use his legs

As Rohrey approached his car, one of the men inside pulled out a gun and opened fire:

“All I remember is that I’m falling backward and for some reason I know I’m not going to be able to get back up. I have no idea. I don’t feel anything. I don’t hear anything. All I do is just see him run away. And then, I lost my memory, I don’t remember what happened.”

As the suspects sped away, Rohrey’s neighbors rushed to help. He had been shot twice, once in the leg and once in the neck. Rohrey had to be revived twice on the way to the hospital:

“They didn’t think I was gonna make it through the surgery, but I did. So now I have a lot of gratitude. More than I can really express.”

Years have passed since the shooting. Rohrey Wychgel cannot move his legs or hands, and has limited use of his arms.   Police are hoping that someone might be able to help identify his attackers.

And the burglars were Mexican. Mexicans are the majority in this area and the physical description is clear that the burglars were Mexicans

Of course it has to be a Mexican cause they are just so evil and deadly (rolls eyes). I really doubt it. The sketch looks like a white male. And I find it hard to believe that whomever did this was a local perp. If so why was he not identified. I bet it was a older teen trying to get a thrill. When he spotted by Rohney the kid probably got scared of going to jail and shot him before taking off. Some times it’s a simple motion. Unless the guy has a come to God and confess this case probably will stay a cold case. It’s tragic.

This is just so unfortunate. I also agree its was likely gang initiation. If it was auto theft, the shooter would have just drove off. It is scary to think that random acts like this can occur. Not sure if this could ever be solved.

Unfortunately rohrey passed away last year in November it’s ashamed considering this was a random attempted robbery turned attempted murder which is one of the more difficult cases to solve the odds of this case being solved is highly unlikely

Definitely gang related. Unfortunately this area of OC isn’t the best. I live in Anaheim (yes where Disneyland is) and it’s 15 minutes from the city of Orange whwre this crime occurred. Anaheim is called Anacrime because it’s unsafe. Three years ago I was sitting in my car with my then boyfriend when two men driving by stopped their car and hopped out and tried opening our doors with us still inside. I was afraid they were going to try to kidnap me so I told my bf to gun it and he did and they didn’t chase

Poor kid. It was either a case of mistaken identity or possibly a gang initiation. I’m leaning more towards the latter, being somewhat close to Los Angeles.
I hope his gf stayed with him.

This may sound phony and lame but I feel like I say him before. I think I saw him at an Amtrak train station a few years ago in Georgia. I may be wrong. The sketch is so generic, it could be anyone.

This sketch isn’t the craziest I have seen but knowing this man is likely a killer this is scary.

I think what would help in those situations is video registrator in the car and in the premises. The video should be sent through network to a safe computer. It won’t probably stop the crime, but it would help catch the offenders.
